This blog will discuss an important law enforcement approach
to crime that may or may not be as popular or a common practice among law
enforcement departments. Reactive policing has been a common theme from the
very beginning of policing and has stayed strong to even modern day law
enforcement policies. Agencies would react to an even that has recently
transpired or that is currently being taken place due to the fact that no other
technique has been introduced until fairly recently. It has taken that reactive
force into a proactive measure by understanding root causes of incidents and
problems rather than continually battling the same obstacles with no real
results in the overall reduction of crime. By becoming an integral component of
the philosophy of community policing, it has opened up new avenues in which the
public sees Law Enforcement. It has also introduced a new structure of
accountability of law enforcement officials; which has mended new command
structures within the agencies. This new approach of problem oriented policing
has become an instrumental tool for law enforcement agencies today. The end products theme became an
important idea that focused on the need to assess the problems at hand, such as
quality of life issues and crimes. Most of the crimes that were focused on when
using this newly developed innovation directed its attention to theft, robbery,
graffiti, and sexual assault. Although, it may not be considered more effective
than other techniques, researchers suggest that with time, patience, and good
training, it can be achieved. It is just another tool that should be utilized
and may need to be tailored as needed. Again, even though this technique has
been around for a while, I don’t truly think a lot of departments utilize it
because it can be time intensive. Although, if used correctly, I think it would
be far more effective than just being a reactive force.
